I am white my kids are brown. In the late 80's we stopped at a Shaved Ice Stand in Louisiana. My husband and I let the kids go up to the stand alone as we sat watching from the car. They waited through two rounds of the line. I realized something was going on. I got out of the car and went up to the stand where two black people were working. I asked, "What's the problem here?" No problem. They were asked for their order as I stood guard. Culture. If you don't look like me we don't get served. If you don't look the norm you get checked out. Back in the day...
